Kent County adding 4-way stop after deadly crash

ALGOMA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — An intersection near Rockford where a crash recently killed a man will soon get more stop signs.

The Kent County Board of Road Commissioners Tuesday approved converting 13 Mile Road and Pine Island Drive in Algoma Township to a four-way stop.

The move comes about two weeks after 49-year-old Todd Carlson of Casnovia was killed when a car turning from 13 Mile Road onto Pine Island Drive hit his van. The rollover crash also injured the other driver from Wyoming and the two girls riding in her car.

The road commission said a recent analysis of traffic and crashes at the intersection showed a need to convert the intersection. Road officials said roadways must meet specific federal criteria before traffic signs can be altered.

The road commission plans to have all the stop signs installed by the end of the week, weather permitting.
