Pedestrian Hit and Killed on 28th Street

The Grand Rapids Police Department is investigating a fatal car/pedestrian accident which occurred on 28th st. between Jefferson Ave. and Madison Ave. SE. The accident happened at 10:10 pm. 

A preliminary investigation reveals that the pedestrian was crossing 28th St from north to south when he was struck by a vehicle as it traveled in the westbound lanes. The victim ricocheted off the vehicle and landed in the roadway where he may have been struck by a second vehicle which continued westbound after the crash. That vehicle was described as a light colored mid-sized SUV. License plate information on the second vehicle is unavailable.

The unidentified male victim was transported to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The victim did not have identification on his person. His name will be released upon positive identification and notification of next of kin. The driver of the initial vehicle was not injured.

The pedestrian involved in the fatal accident is identified as Kenneth Allen Dewinter, 29 years of age. The crash remains under investigation.
