PD: Pickett 'very out of it' after deadly cycling crash

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Jurors in the Charles Pickett trial on Wednesday heard from the people who were there the day he drove his pickup truck into a pack of cyclists north of Kalamazoo, killing five of them.

A witness identified Charles Pickett Jr. in court for the first time Wednesday. She testified she heard the crash, ran to the scene and heard a cyclist calling for help.

Debbie Bradley, Melissa Fevig-Hughes, Tony Nelson, Larry Paulik and Suzanne Sippel were killed in the crash. Four other cyclists who were part of their group, called The Chain Gang, were injured.

Several members of the group testified Wednesday morning about their traumatic injuries.

Ride organizer Jennifer Johnson talked about the moment she woke up after the June 7, 2016 crash on Westnedge Avenue in Cooper Township.

"(I) started scanning my body (and) struggled when I couldn't find my right leg. (I) found it over my right shoulder," she said.

Johnson said she had no memory of being hit by the vehicle - a sentiment echoed by another survivor.

"Early in the day, I intended to go on a bike ride that day, and that's all the memory of the day that I have," said cyclist Paul Gobble.
