GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A development that would’ve redefined downtown Grand Rapids’ skyline may be shrinking.
The city previously approved Hinman Company’s plans to build a 42-story residential and hotel development at 10 Ionia Ave. NW.
The 418-foot structure would’ve been Grand Rapids’ first skyscraper, standing 12 feet higher than River House Condominiums, which is currently the city’s tallest building.
Now the Portage-based company wants to scale down the proposed structure to roughly 13 stories, according to the Historic Preservation Commission’s agenda. The proposed design and material would remain the same; some features would be reduced in size to fit the smaller building.
The reason for the change is unclear, although the developer says the revised 162-foot building will be similar in size to the historic 12-story structure that once sat on the site between Fulton and Louis streets. Currently, the space is home to a parking lot.
The Historic Preservation Commission will consider the change during its June 20 meeting.
