Jenison retirement home celebrates centenarians

GEORGETOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A Jenison retirement community threw party Wednesday to recognize its especially long-lived residents.

Sunset Retirement Communities has 14 residents who are turning 100 or older this year. One of them is Robert Lutz, who entered the centenarian club May 10.

"I graduated from school in Washington the day Japan surrendered, believe it or not. They knew I was coming," Lutz remembered with a laugh.

He and his wife Dorothea Lutz moved from New Jersey to West Michigan in 1952 so their children could get a Christian education.

"You got to give my wife the credit," Robert Lutz said about their long marriage. "She's been patient. She's been a good wife, a very good wife."

Meeting couples like the Lutzes is part of the joy of working at Sunset Retirement Communities, COO Christina Matzke said.
