Kzoo close to allowing medical marijuana sales

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — The City of Kalamazoo is getting closer to allowing businesses to grow, sell and transport medical marijuana.

Those interested in opening a medical marijuana dispensary only have one more week to apply for a city permit.

It’s a process that began in earnest six years ago. Kalamazoo voters approved an amendment to the city charter in 2012 allowing medical marijuana dispensaries.

But, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled them illegal shortly after that. Then the state legislature made them legal again in 2016.

In April, the Kalamazoo City Commission adopted an ordinance to allow medical marijuana dispensaries, known as provisioning centers, as well as other categories relating to medical marijuana. The city started accepting applications for medical marijuana permits June 7.

An application for a provisioning center is $3,000. Applications for the other medical marijuana categories cost $5,000.

The deadline to submit an application for a medical marijuana permit is 5 p.m. on June 28.
