People leave powerless homes, head to hotels

CASCADE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — With tens of thousands of Consumers Energy customers without power across the state, West Michigan hotel rooms are filling up fast as many people check in until their service is restored.

Some metro Grand Rapids hotels sold out Thursday, including the Country Inn & Suites off 28th Street in Cascade Township.

"People keep extending stays or canceling stays," Amanda Renis, the front desk manager at the Country Inn & Suites, said. "It's going to be packed in here tonight."

Her phone was ringing off the hook.
