GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Nurse Nichole Imhoff left her Rockford home to help in the fight against COVID-19 in the U.S. state hardest hit by the virus, literally not knowing when she would return,

Imhoff left April 4 and didn’t get back until May 23.

The Rockford nurse traveled to the Bronx in New York City to work at Lincoln Hospital. She treated COVID-19 patients in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Imhoff told News 8 Tuesday, “I was scared every single day. When I first got there, I was literally scared to breathe the air around me.”

She said ICU nurses were caring for six patients each at the New York Hospital where she worked. Ideally, ICU nurses have one critically ill patient a piece and never more than two.

Statistically, Now York is the state with the highest number of coronavirus cases and deaths. It has reported 368,669 confirmed cases and 29,241 confirmed or suspected coronavirus deaths, according to a Tuesday report from The New York Times.
