Health Deptartment confirms EEE cases in Kent and Newaygo County horses

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — County Health Department officials have identified two more cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis in West Michigan horses, one of them in Kent County.

Officials said the other case is in Newaygo County, which has now had a two EEE cases — both in horses — this year.

Clare county was the location of the state’s first case this year, announced August 11 in a 2-year-old filly in Clare County. The second case, announced Aug. 19, was in a 12-year-old mare in Montcalm County. The first case in Newaygo County was announced last week, Aug. 28.

Health department officials say a total of 10 horses statewide had been infected with EEE as of Monday.
