Lansing man facing charges after hitting GRPD officer with baton

A Lansing man is facing five felony charges after hitting a Grand Rapids Police Officer with a baton.

Twenty-five-year-old Danny Demetrius Hairston is facing charges for assaulting a police officer causing injury, larceny, disarming a police officer other than a gun, attempting to disarm a police officer of a firearm and attempting to disarm a police officer other than a gun.

The charges are connected to an incident at the Verizon store on Michigan Street NE near Fuller Avenue on May 26.

The store manager says Hairston attempted to steal some car keys, headphones and cellphones.

Hairston fought with the officer attempting to arrest him and tried to grab the officer's taser and gun.

Hairston was able to grab the officer's baton and hit him with it.
