Firefighters training for electric vehicle dangers

Local firefighters are training for the different hazards electric vehicles bring to the roadways.

Electric vehicle batteries pose new risks for firefighters.

Grand Rapids Fire Department Captain Paul Mason says its not a major problem in the area now, but they are anticipating electric vehicles becoming more popular in the coming years.

Mason says the local Tesla Service Center recently taught a team how to get into the battery compartment of an EV, how to de-energize the vehicle and what key hazard points are.

GRFD is also looking at ways other departments in the U.S. are fighting electric vehicle fires and may put some of those strategies into practice.
