Text-to-911 being used in Kent Co.

Kent County is in the first few weeks of text-to-911 services and dispatchers are already receiving an average of six texts a day.

Kent County Sheriff Office Communications Center Assistant Manager Jennifer Robinson says its the same as texting any other contacts in your phone, however they prefer you start the text with your location.

Officials say the service is beneficial for people who are hard of hearing or deaf or for individuals who cannot make a phone call during their emergency.

Kent County Sheriff Sgt. Eric Brunner says the service allowed a 49-year-old woman, who alleged she was threatened to not contact authorities, to text dispatch and get help resolving a situation.
